Why doesn’t the Moon fall? A simple answer for kids
A child looks up at the night sky and asks: “Why doesn’t the Moon fall down?” You can begin with two ideas: Earth pulls, and the Moon moves.
The short answer to share
“Earth’s gravity pulls the Moon towards us. But the Moon is also moving sideways very fast. Together, that pull and movement make its path curve around Earth. That journey is called an orbit.”
For a younger child, stop there. Let their next question guide how much you explain.
Is there gravity in space?
Yes. Gravity is why the Moon stays in orbit around Earth. It does not need air, a rope or something to rest on. Saying that there is no gravity in space would leave out the very thing that keeps the Moon’s path curving.
A drawing to try together
Draw a large circle for Earth and a small Moon beside it. Add an arrow from the Moon towards Earth to show gravity’s pull. Then add another arrow pointing sideways to show the Moon’s movement. Draw a curved path around Earth.
Ask: “Where do you think the Moon will be next?” This is a picture to help you talk, rather than a model drawn to scale.
A little more for grown-ups
The Moon is in continuous free fall around Earth. Its sideways motion means it keeps missing Earth as it falls. Its orbit is slightly oval, so our circular drawing is a simplification. NASA’s guide to orbits explains how gravity and motion work together.

Next time you see the Moon, notice its shape and where it appears. You do not need to have every answer ready. “Let’s find out together” is a good place to begin.
